Police man who killed colleague in rivers state has been subjected to orderly room trial
A police officer, Sergeant Bitrus Osaiah, who reportedly shot and killed his colleague, Lovender Elekwachi in Rivers State, has presently been subjected to orderly room trial.
Osaiah, who was attached to the Rivers State Taskforce, was said to have misused his firearms while on duty with the taskforce at Eneka Town, Obio-Akpo Local Government Area of the state and in the process killed the woman.
A statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Nnamdi Omoni, said two other members of the Taskforce were also arrested and were undergoing interrogation.
He said the police impounded the Hilux van belonging to the taskforce while the corpse of the victim had been deposited in a mortuary.
He said the new Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, had ordered full investigations into the circumstances that led to her death and appealed to members of the public to remain calm.
He said: “The Rivers State Police Command regrets to announce the death of W/Sgt Lovender Elekwachi who until her untimely death was serving at Eneka Division and was posted to the Eneka roundabout on traffic duties.
“The late Woman Sergeant was shot while controlling traffic by Sergeant Bitrus Osaiah attached to the Operations Department of the Command.
“Meanwhile, the Sergeant who is said to be attached the Rivers State Task Force on Decongestion, has been arrested, disarmed and undergoing Orderly Room Trial.
“Two other members of the Task Force have also been arrested and are being questioned. The Hilux vehicle belonging to the Task Force has been impounded and the corpse of the Woman Sergeant deposited in the mortuary.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph G. Mukan, has ordered investigation into the matter with a view to unraveling the circumstances that led to her death and has appealed for calm, pending the outcome of the investigation, promising that the interest of justice must be served in the circumstance”.
Reacting to the development, the Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, called on the police to ensure speedy investigation and trial of the killer cop.
He said: “Sergeant Bitrus Osaiah is an employee of the Nigerian Police Force, posted to the Operations Department of the Rivers State Police Command. He committed a criminal offence in broad daylight. In the presence of the entire community.
“We pray God to grant her family the strength to bear the irreparable loss. Her killer, a Police sergeant must face the law. However, his trial must be done transparently. This is not a time for endless investigations. The public knows her killer. The society also knows her
