Breaking news-House of reps suspends sports festival in Edo state and other sporting events due to Coronavirus


The house of representatives has today suspends the sports festival which was supposed to hold in Edo state next week.

The honorable members reach the decision as a Matter of Urgent Public Importance which was raised in the foor of the house.

Hon. Luke from Akwa Ibom moved the motion on the postponement of the sports festival while Hon. Olumelu seconded. The honourable members said their there’s need to think safety first since the coronavirus spread is on the rise.

However, some members were of the opinion that the sport festival which is going to gather about 12,000 people will serve as a source of revenue to the Edo state people.

Meanwhile, the speaker Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, vehemently refused stating that ” it will be irresponsible of the Nigerian law makers or any one to go ahead with the sporting activities considering the dangers of the massive spread of the Covid 19 virus

The speaker further note that, in a time where countries all around the world are taking proactive majors to safeguard the spread of the disease which has been a world pandemic.

Speaker Gbajabiamila further said that even advanced countries who are more developed and more equipped are taking swift majors in tackling the situation by stopping gatherings of at least 20 people, and so Nigeria should bot be an exception.

The house later collectively agreed to suspend the Edo state festival and all other sporting activities in the country for the time being in other not to put the lives of Nigerians at risk.
